Technology at KIS

Dr. Puk

KIS’s philosophy regarding technology in the classroom takes a modern approach. Rather than simply teach technology in an isolated class, the school has decided rather to teach and learn with technology.

This approach allows for technology to be evident, but seamless in the curriculum. It makes it accessible to all learners, facilitates classroom environments and enhances curriculum design and planning. For example, during Grade 3’s Unit of Inquiry on Natural Disasters, students went on a virtual field trip to a volcano using virtual reality glasses and during Grade 2’s Unit of Inquiry on Biomes, the students learned about how land forms are created with the Augmented Reality Sandbox.

By incorporating technology into the classrooms, technology becomes adaptive to many contexts: cultural, physical and educational, is supportive of intercultural understanding, global engagement and multilingualism, and allows for fostering the collection, creation, design and analysis of significant content. A good example of this would be when Grade 6 Math students were working on their Unit, “Consumption and Its Impact,” students were required to research real and up-to-date data to perform their calculations.

Here are some of the key skills taught to students incorporated into their other learning:

  • Recording and editing audio and videos
  • Creating Presentations
  • Collaborating with peers, teachers, parents, and classrooms/communities around the world
  • Creating and editing images
  • Reading audio books
  • Creating written content
  • Developing organizational skills
  • Learning and understanding mathematical skills, charts, graphs, etc.
  • Blogging and podcasting
  • Virtual and augmented field trips
  • Responding to polls and quizzes
  • Coding
  • And so many more…

At KIS, we also believe in the importance of promoting student leadership to increase confidence and independence in using technology. This is why we’ve created Student Tech Teams in both Primary and Secondary School who offer high-level technology support and advice to the KIS Community including their peers, teachers, administrators, staff, and parents!

In conclusion, there are endless ways to get involved in technology for interested students at KIS: from getting involved in the Tech Teams, Robotics Clubs, coding classes to taking advantage of all the state-of-the-art technology available for our students!
